Albert E Kagel School

oil on wood, 12″ x 16″, 2015

Located at 1210 W. Mineral Street in Milwaukee, WI. Henry C. Koch, architect, built in 1891.

This is an open and active, well-maintained public school. Designed by Henry C. Koch, this building is a twin to the Golda Meir School on Martin Luther King Drive. It is a grand and heavy building that dominates the neighborhood landscape. Unlike Golda Meir, whose main entrance has long been blocked by a boiler room addition, Kagel retains much of its original look, though its chimneys and roof ornaments are gone. Like many of its peers, it once had a slate roof that was replaced by asphalt shingles. Because of the pride I can sense in this building, I painted it at night, but transitioning to dawn. The night is clear and the stars are bright. Dawn is breaking pink which could mean that there’s some inclement weather on the horizon. The front facade features a frieze of a owl which is a creature of the night and a symbol of wisdom.
