5th Street School

oil on wood, 8″ x 10″, 2015

Located at 2770 N. 5th Street, Herman P. Schnetzky, architect, built in 1888, closed in 1978.

After closing as a school, 5th Street later served as the Isaac Coggs School and then the MLK Heritage Health Center until the Center moved to a new facility nearby. The Department of City Development is in the process of selling the building, which is a twin (albeit a larger one after an expansion around the turn of the 20th century) to Walnut Street School, which burned down in 1978. I made this painting from the fifth floor of the Enterprise Center across the street on the north side of the school. The school still retains some of its original roof ornamentation, but is missing its vent tower. As I painted, I observed pigeons congregating on the boiler room smoke stack late in the day and seagulls on the southernmost peak and chimney. To the southwest is Mt. Moriah Baptist Church.
