Herman P. Schnetzky, architect, built in 1888, closed in 1977.

This school burned down in 1978. It was a twin to the larger 5th Street School. The architectural renderings are housed in the Milwaukee Public Library Special Collections, and the library rules prohibited me from using a camera to photograph the plans, but the librarians did let me take pictures with my tablet. I later assembled the tablet snaps into a collage. Because I was really drawn to the early architectural plans that were drawn and inked by hand in the days before blueprints or CAD software, I decided to make a painting that captured the elegance of the front elevation. I wanted to keep the look of the collage as a reminder of Walnut Street School’s impermanence.
