Rufus King High School
oil on wood, 12″ x 16″, 2014
Located at 1801 W. Olive Street, Guy Wiley, architect, built in 1933.
This art deco building sports myriad carved stone embellishments and a tall central tower. The plans were also used, though expanded, for Pulaski High School on the south side later in the 1930s. I’ve heard that the inside is quite impressive, too, with decorative tile floors and plaster friezes. This school is open and often recognized internationally for its high academic achievement. I decided to paint this building featuring the tower as a symbol of its lofty accomplishments, and I included details around the picture format to feature the stonework and give a glimpse of the whole school.
